This is it.
What the Internet has been waiting for, with bated breath…a deeper look into the enigma that is our beloved Rob Neu.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Rob these past few years and I can say that Rob, hands down, is one of the most genuine and generous people I’ve ever met. I’m the biggest tech dummy at WP Site Care and I always know I can count on Rob to walk me through technical stuff without the whole Nick Burns ‘MOVE’ schtick. You know:
Rob hails from Florida, where he lives with his fabulous lady love, Nickie, and their ridiculously cute pup, Piper. Rob has a penchant for good coffee, pizza (as you will see below) and a zero tolerance policy for BS.
Without further ado, I give you…Rob Neu:
What knowledge/experience do you have that brought you to WPSC?
The main thing that brought me to WP Site Care is probably my background in SEO. When I first met Ryan on Twitter, I connected with him on Skype and proceeded to yell at him for having such lousy SEO on his site. I offered to help him fix it for free and Ryan, being the enterprising genius that he is, took me up on it. I hooked him up and his traffic started to move in the right direction pretty quickly.
It wasn’t long after that when we kicked around the idea that turned into the best WordPress hosting post and I think that really cemented things between us. It was a really symbiotic relationship… Ryan got free help growing his business and I got someone to bullshit with on Skype in the middle of the night. All was right with the world.
We collaborated on a bunch of projects after that while I did my best to keep my head above water in my myriad of business ventures. Eventually it became pretty clear that Ryan had a much better head for business than I do and the merger of our companies was almost a total no-brainer. Still, looking back on things the main reason I’m a part of WPSC today is because I was willing to help Ryan out for free where others had tried to sell him nonsense and psudo-solutions. It’s pretty cool that doing free work actually can pay off eventually. Sometimes I forget that.
What inspires you?
Ehhhhhh, I don’t know that anything really “inspires” me. I just have a strong work ethic. If I’m not working on something I start to get antsy. I spent a long time in my late teens and early 20’s doing literally nothing and it wasn’t good for my psyche.
Now that I’m older, I understand the value of work and that’s really what keeps me moving. Basically, it’s a selfish thing. I work hard so that I don’t wind up in a rubber room somewhere bouncing off the walls.
What is the the most unexpected/shameful song in your playlist?
Oh lord. I dunno… let me see… my playlists are all pretty dope to be honest. Probably the weirdest one that jumps out at me is Move Your Feet by Junior Senior. I’ve also got some Master P in there… that’s probably pretty embarrassing to some people, but they need to stop hatin’.
Who would play you in WPSC, the Movie?
That’s not really a fair question. There’s only so many fat actors out there and I’m not really sure any of them would do me justice. If I had to pick someone, I’d time travel back to the late 90’s and get the American History X version of Ethan Suplee to do it. He’s a jerk and lost a bunch of weight, so I don’t think he could pull it off now.
First or worst job?
Well, Site Care is probably my worst job, so let’s go with the first one instead. 😉
The first job I ever had was for a cleaning company called ABM. Basically I was a janitor, but I really liked the job. I worked in the American Cancer Society headquarters and I had my own floor to myself. It was a really laid back job… all you really had to do was dust and wipe down everything, vacuum, and dump everyone’s trash out.
For a while I was on the second floor which is where the cafeteria was… that floor wasn’t so much fun. People would do this awesome thing where they’d cram the trash closest to the exit completely full even though there were at least 6 other empty trash cans placed throughout the cafeteria.
I can remember more than a few nights that were spent cleaning disgusting trash mess out of the cafeteria carpet and ranting about how stupid people with college degrees were.
Good times…. good times.
I don’t know if I really have any secret talents. Hmmm… I used to be pretty good at flying stunt kites, but it’s been a pretty long time. I could probably still hang though…
What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
Probably something pretty similar to what I do now. I like computers and working from home, so my job is pretty perfect in general. Sure, there are lots of aspects that I’d probably stop dealing with if I could just wave a magic wand and get them to go away with no risk involved… but overall I wouldn’t change a whole lot.
I think I’d probably try to shift over to more producty-type things, but I’ve never been involved in a popular digital product of any kind so I can’t really say for sure whether I’d actually like that. We’ve got a couple of interesting things coming out at Site Care that might let me experience that a bit, but we’ll see. 🙂
Pizza. For sure pizza. Pizza is probably like 80% of the reason why I’m fat aside from sitting in front of a computer all day and night. Most food I could pretty much take it or leave it, but life without pizza sounds like a real empty, horrible place. 😭
Favorite WordPress Plugin?
Wow, that’s a hard one. If I had to pick one it’d probably be Infinite WP List Tables by my friend Brady. I’m saying that one not only because it’s a really handy plugin that makes the admin experience of WordPress a lot nicer, but also because it really exemplifies what I think a plugin should be. It’s very small, specific, and does exactly what you expect it to do without anything extra.
Best new tech – favorite gadget?
I bought a new Vizio TV not too long ago. It came with an android tablet for the remote which is pretty cool. It’s also pretty damn annoying sometimes, usually when I’m trying to find something to watch while we’re having dinner and my food is rapidly getting colder…
BUT YEAH IT’S GREAT I LOVE TECHNOLOGY
What would you choose for your last meal?
PIZZA WEREN’T YOU LISTENING BEFORE?! JEEZ
Favorite place on the planet.
Our house. More specifically, the pool at our house. I really only leave the house when absolutely necessary, so I do my best to make sure all the stuff in our house is pretty cool. Nickie and I bought our house in Spring Hill, Florida earlier this year after a two year exile in an apartment in the lone star state. We’re still working on fixing it up and finding furniture for it and all that kind of stuff.
10 years ago I don’t think I really could have imagined owning my own home, so it’s still pretty cool to me that we were able to buy a house that we really like in a laid back neighborhood. I’m sure eventually I’ll get jaded and hate everything about the house because it’s old, or ugly, or whatever… but for now everything is 💯 👍 👌.
